Internet Lesson # 07 Continuity Through Evolution and Ecosystems of the Past
(revised for the current day because the internet was not available the previous week)
Thursday, October 9, 2003. This is an online lesson for a biology class at St. Joseph High School. It is taking place in the school's computer room. The purpose of the lesson is to allow the students to use the SCILINKS and other links for Chapters 9 in the BSCS Biology, 9th Edition Textbooks. In using scilinks.org and the other links, students will reinforce and supplement their learning about the content of the Chapters.
PROCEDURE:
1) This is Objective B-51. Each student will sign-on to scilinks.org and then go to the online resources and the other links listed below. Write a minimum of 2 lines about the websites visited unless other instructions are given. Do this on 2 sheets (4 sides) of loose-leaf paper which are due at the end of class. You must also give evidence that you are using all of your classtime visiting the assigned websites. Try to go to as many of the websites as possible but do not move through them too quickly as the time is indicated on the class report. Hand-in B-51 at the end of class.
2) The codes will not be listed on this website. You need only to go to the one on evolution listed on Page 227.
3) At that Scilinks site, go to these websites in any order: Life Overtime, Human Prehistory, and Human Evolution (humboldt). Read and follow as much as you can at these websites.
4) After Scilinks visit the websites below.
Go to PBS Evolution: All in the Family- Test Your Skills (Read and follow it.)
Go to (Watch the bacteria grow.)
Go to PBS Evolution: Darwin: An Origin of Species (Read it all.)
Go to PBS Evolution: Religion- the Evolution Revolution (List each of the items in the timeline and read each one.)
Go to Truth Cannot Contradict Truth. - Title of an Address of Pope John Paul II to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences on October 22, 1996.
Go to The Dinosauria: Truth is Stranger Than Fiction and links (Follow the many links.)
5) Then go to one of these online books. Then, hopefully, you will want to come back and continue reading all of the 3 books online at a later time.
Go to Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin (Chapter Indexed)
Go to The Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin (Chapter Indexed)
Go to The Descent of Man by Charles Darwin (Chapter Indexed)
6) Go to these SCILINKS fo Chapter 21 if there is enough time. Otherwise, start with this in next week's internet session:
a) Page 554a - especially go to "Kansas Fossils", "La Brea Tar Pits", "Sabre-toothed Cats", "Fossil Groups-Spores and Pollen".
b) Page 554b - especially go to "Virtual Dating" - the demo and virtual dating radiocarbon.
c) Page 565 - especially go to "Field Adventures in Paleontology" - select Australia., "Evolution" - Darwin.
d) Page 569 - especially go to "Human Prehistory an Exhibition" - walk through the 6 rooms.
e) Page 572 - especially go to "Bones, Stones, Artifacts" and "Comparative Faunal Laboratory".
f) If there is any time left, go back and visit as many of the other websites as time allows.
7) Be sure to read and study Chapters 9, 21,10, 11 for the Unit 3 Test . Then use your extra time at home to review Chapters 1 to 10 and 21, all of your assignments and handouts in preparation for the Semester Exam shortly after the Unit 3 Test. If you have internet access at home, send any questions that you have to sjhs@islands.vi For homework do Objective B-61- Application Questions on Page 273 , # 1,3,4,5
8) Unit 3 Test on Chapters 9, 21, and 10 will be on Tuesday, 10/14/03. The Semester Exam on Chapters 1 - 10 and 21 and on the handout papers and notes given in class will be on Friday, 10/17/03.
