WINNERS OF THE 2002 ST.
JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM
For the third year in a row, St. Joseph
High School has had a unique event take place - a science symposium.
In this competition, students do a science project and then make a
presentation of it on videotape. Copies are made of the tape which
are sent to various professional people to be judged. This year,
judging took place during the month of May.
The first place winner was Jamaris Carrasco
who did research into the cleaning up of oil spills. Winning second
place was Elson Carty who pursued the study of the human brain and
the different abilities of its right and left sides. Taking third
place was Jana James who applied Newton's third law to boat
propulsion. The fourth place winner was Karen Henry, who observed the
changing star patterns in the sky over St.Croix. Winning fifth place
was Kenrick Roberts who did some practical applications of a chemical
oxidation reaction.
Over a hundred dollars in cash prizes and
scientific instruments were awarded to the winners. The science
symposium was started by and is moderated by Bro.James Petrait,
webmaster of this site and a science teacher at the school who
received the National Presidential Award for Excellence in Science
Teaching in 1995. Other high school teachers are invited to start
science symposiums at their schools and then to have a territory wide
wide science symposium at St. Joseph High School during the 2002-2003
school year. Contact Bro. James for more details.
