Internet Lesson # 03 Continuity Through Heredity

Wednesday, 9/25/02. This is the third online lesson for a biology class at St. Joseph High School. It is taking place in the school's computer room. The purpose of the lesson is to allow the students to use the SCILINKS for Chapters 8 in the BSCS Biology, 9th Edition Textbooks. In using scilinks.org students will reinforce and supplement their learning about the content of the Chapter.

SPECIAL RULES:

A) Do not use the printer for this class. Sound is not required. If you have earphones and play your CD music, you are breaking a school rule.

B) Do not play games (except for any games you may find in the assignment) on the computer.

C) Do not go to any other websites without permission. If you go to the wrong site by mistake and it is has inappropriate material on it, inform the teacher at once.

D) No email is to be sent and do not go to any newsgroups.

E) Pace yourself. If you are running short on time, then try to visit all of the main sites listed. Also, you may continue outside of classtime.

F) Keep all of the classroom rules.

PROCEDURE:

1) This is Objective B-42. Each student will sign-on to scilinks.org and then go to the online resources and write what is requested on 2 sheets (4 sides) of loose-leaf paper which are due at the end of class. You must also give evidence that you are using all of your classtime visiting the assigned websites. You should have visited 3 scilinks and 12 or more websites. Try to go to as many of the websites as possible but do not move through them too quickly as the time is indicated on the class report. Hand-in B-42 at the end of class.

2) The codes will not be listed on this website. You must find the appropriate ones in Chapters 8 in your textbook. The code on Page 193 is probably not working but will come up with the code on Page 204.

3) Start by going to the topics of Mendelian Genetics on Page 146. Start with Mendel's Laws and write down a summary of both. Do these topics later (since they may be longer): Map a Gene (do the puzzle and write a paragraph about it), Pea Soup (describe Mendel's Pea Experiment)

4) On page 204, you should find Genetic Diseases, etc. Look at the following websites and list an important idea or ideas that you learned from each one: Cloning Plants..., Scottish Sheep Shocker, Role of Genetic Counseling, How are Genes Linked to Diseases?.

5) On Page 207, you will find Genetic Engineering. Look at DNA from A to Z and write down those items listed that correspond to the letters of your first name. Then choose at least 2 more websites and write some of the important ideas learned.

6) Go back and do the other ones on Page 146. Until the end of class, visit as many of the websites on Page 204 until the Block is over.

HOMEWORK: B-43 - Do the Application Questions 1-5 on Page 210. Read and Study Chapters 5-8. Test on Friday, 9/27/02.
