Internet Lesson # 01 Signing on and using scilinks.org and learning more about the structures and functions of cells.

Friday, 9/13/02. This is the first online lesson for a biology class at St. Joseph High School. It is taking place in the school's computer room. The purpose of the lesson is to introduce the students to the use of scilinks.org which is an online resource from the National Science Teachers Association. It is keyed to the students' new BSCS Biology, 9th Edition Textbooks. In using scilinks.org students will also supplement their learning about the structures and functions of cells.

PROCEDURE:

1) This is Objective B-26. Each student will sign-on and register to scilinks.org and then go to the online resources and write or sketch what is requested on a sheet of loose-leaf paper which is due at the end of class.

2) Click on scilinks.org below. Go to REGISTER HERE. Register as a student. It is required that it be done correctly for this class. You need to use your correct first name and only the initial of your last name. You make up a username (suggestion: your first name and last name initial together.) and a password that you must remember. Then enter the zipcode of the school, 00840 and the State (Territory), VI. Then enter your teacher's username which is jpetrait.

3) After registering, you should be at MY SCILINKS. Go to FIND INTERNET RESOURCES. There, you will be entering a 5 letter/number code which is keyed to your new textbook. The 3 codes from Chapter 5 will be followed for this assignment. Each code consists of the letters GV (for Green Version) followed by the page number in the textbook.

4) Go to each of the following coded sites and do what is requested on loose-leaf paper:

A) Enter GV119. There are 12 links underneath. Click on 3D CELL and find the 3 cell pictures. Make a quick, labeled sketch of each cell on your loose-leaf paper. Return to FIND INTERNET RESOURCES.

B) Enter GV122. Go to the 4th link down, MEMBRANE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION. Make a quick, labeled sketch of the Danielli-Dawson Model. Return to FIND INTERNET RESOURCES.

C) Enter GV129. Go to the 2nd link down, THE CELL CYCLE AND MITOSIS TUTORIAL Do the MITOSIS tutorial and answer the 2 mitosis questions. Write the correct answers to the 2 questions on your loose-leaf paper. Then go and try to view the MITOSIS ANIMATION. This is a 480K file and will take a few minutes to load. Also it will only work if your computer has quicktime on it. If you get the video, view it and write a paragraph describing it.

D) If you could not do the previous paragraph, find a substitute and write the paragraph about it. There are many links to explore on this topic. If you have time, you need to go back and explore as many of the other links as possible and list the names of each on your loose-leaf paper. YOU MAY NOT GO TO ANY OTHER WEBSITE OR PLAY GAMES ON YOUR COMPUTER DURING THE BIOLOGY CLASS. YOU MAY NOT SEND OR RECEIVE EMAIL OR PRINT OUT ANY TEXT OR GRAPHIC.

HOMEWORK: B-27 Write a 150 words report on the stages of mitosis in a plant cell and describe the appearances of the chromosomes during each stage of mitosis. Use your textbook for reference and what you remembered from scilinks.org.
